Brent Sherwin's late drop goal ended Hull's 100 per cent record as Castleford recorded a shock 19-18 victory at the KC Stadium.
The Australian's one-pointer with three minutes to play put the Tigers into a lead that they managed to retain through to the final hooter.
Hull will look back with regret on a rare off-day from kicker Danny Tickle as their unbeaten run came to a halt in front of their own fans.
Richard and Graeme Horne scored all four of the Airlie Birds' tries but Tickle could only land one of his conversion attempts.
In touch
The forward's inability to slot over the extras meant Castleford were always in touch in a game between the two bottom sides from the 2008 campaign.
Both have vastly improved judging by their starts to the new season, the Black and Whites clearly in buoyant mood fresh from just a second ever win at Bradford in the Super League era.
They were ahead inside the opening minute when Richard Horne - making his 250th appearance - went over, capitalising on ex-Hull winger Kirk Dixon's failure to deal with Chris Thorman's up-and-under.
Tickle did land the conversion but Dixon made amends for his error when he dived over in the corner and then added the extras himself.
The Tigers should have been ahead but Michael Shenton failed to hold onto the ball with the line at his mercy. Hull had no such problems on the 20-minute mark, going ahead again thanks to another error from the visitors.
This time Richard Owen was the culprit under another Thorman high ball, Graeme Horne cleverly hacking on the loose ball before touching down.
Having trailed at the half-time interval by four points, soon after the re-start Castleford forced their way ahead.
Slender advantage
Joe Westerman found his way to the try-line and Dixon's goal made it 12-10, though their slender advantage lasted for all of four minutes.
Graeme Horne touched down at the second attempt and then completed an impressive hat-trick after good work by hooker Shaun Berrigan.
However, Tickle's failure with both kicks left the game in the melting pot and when Dixon showed him how it should be done after Ryan McGoldrick had gone over, the game was all-square.
Richard Horne failed with a drop goal in the 67th minute and Sherwin also missed his first attempt, though the scrum-half made no mistake second time around to give the Tigers an impressive result on their travels.
