Orr inspires Tigers

Danny Orr bagged a hat-trick as the Castleford Tigers staged a remarkable late comeback to beat the Salford City Reds 34-30 at the PROBIZ Coliseum.

After slipping behind early on Castleford hit back to lead 22-12 before three second-half tries from Salford appeared to secure what looked a winning position Phil Veivers' side.

The struggling Tigers were trailing 30-22 with seven minutes remaining, but scores from Nick Youngquest and Craig Huby secured the unlikeliest of victories.

The hosts started the brighter and went ahead when Youngquest found the gap in the Reds' defence to crash over after 15 minutes with Kirk Dixon missing the subsequent conversion.

But Salford sensed blood after Brett Ferres was shown a yellow card for slowing down a Reds restart, and their numerical advantage paid off as Sean Gleeson burst through before releasing Vinnie Anderson to cross. Marc Sneyd's conversion put the visitors in front.

Ferres' spell on the sidelines continued to hamper his side as Jodie Broughton added Salford's second try moments later.

Pace

The winger, who had two tries last time out against Catalan, cut inside and used his blistering pace to motor away and score. Sneyd added the routine extras to put Salford 12-4 up.

With the numbers once again evened up, coach Ian Millward turned to Orr in a move which turned the game in Castleford's favour.

It was Orr himself who reduced the deficit, spinning away from defenders before diving over. Dixon's conversion brought Cas within two and they went into the break with the lead thanks to Jordan Thompson's try.

Upon hearing the half-time hooter, Rangi Chase launched a huge up-and-under which Luke Patten failed to deal with, and Thompson pounced, jinking inside to put the Tigers in front. Dixon made it three from four to give Millward's side a 16-12 lead at the break.

Orr continued to lead by example and burrowed over for his second try of the afternoon in the second half with Dixon's goal giving Castleford a 10-point advantage.

However, Salford roared back to score two tries in as many minutes.

Advantage

Joel Moon touched down in the left hand corner before Stephen Wild added another right in front of the travelling support. Sneyd stayed perfect, kicking both conversions to restore the Reds' lead.

Both sides continued to be profligate when deep in their opponent's territory in a game fraught with handling errors.

More Castleford errors gave Salford a fresh set of six near the tryline and Gleeson took advantage, collecting from Patten and Sneyd converted with seven minutes to go.

But the pendulum was to swing one final time as Orr snuck through once more to score under the posts.

His own conversion brought the Tigers to within two and the home crowd were soon off their feet for the first time in the match when Huby touched down moments later.

Another up-and-under caused problems in Salford's defence and the hanging ball was collected by Huby right under the posts to secure a thrilling win for the hosts.
