Verdict

Although trainer Michael Bell has not yet enjoyed as fruitful a summer with his older horses as usual, he can begin to redress that imbalance tonight with GREAT CHARM, who can come good again. Bonnie Prince Blue and Mandalay King are among the dangers. The selection has been out of sorts since a hike up the handicap that followed a soft ground Haydock win over this trip a little over a year ago. Three starts this season have come on surfaces that would be too fast for the four-year-old and he has now dropped to a mark of 80, 3lbs below that of his last win. Trip and ground should be ideal and more rain would be welcomed, so we'll take him to score. Bonnie Prince Blue is now also 3lbs lower than his last winning mark, which was recorded when taking a Folkestone handicap over this trip on good to soft 15 months ago. He is likely to be very competitive. The same applies to Mandalay King, who acts on most ground including on the soft side of good, and is just 1lb higher than his best win, which came over this trip. Mark Of Meydan may now be in the grip of the handicapper but will relish conditions here, while Misplaced Fortune would be more interesting if the ground dried up. The latter comments apply to both Sea Rover and Daaweitza, and Hotham may be a better proposition. Noel Wilson's gelding was good enough to win from a mark of 81 just nine months ago and is 13lbs lower now. He acts with cut in the ground and has to be considered a threat, while Haajes might find this a furlong further than ideal. Again, this is not an easy puzzle to solve but we think that Great Charm can provide the correct answer.
