A difficult race full of unexposed types but preference is for Howle Hill ahead of Soyuz, No Grouse and Nuit Sombre. Alan King has few runners on the Flat but looks to have a useful handicapper to go to war with in the shape of Howle Hill who put up his best effort to date when a strong finishing third behind Self Evident in a hot one-mile handicap at Newmarket on 1,000 Guineas day. The form has been boosted with the runner-up, Arakan, scoring in good style on the first day of the Dante meeting so Howle Hill, who races off the same mark and is favourably drawn, appears to have solid credentials under Kieren Fallon. Soyuz is highly regarded by connections and is expected to make his mark in Pattern events in time after a promising return at Ripon but the fast ground is against him and there also remains a doubt over this longer trip. No Grouse is on a hat-trick after recent wins at Catterick and Chester but is another who may find the mile stretching his stamina while Rifleman is held by the selection on Newmarket form. Cap Ferrat has a touch of class and shaped well on his comeback but is badly drawn so Nuit Sombre, who shaped well on his return at Beverley last weekend may prove a bigger danger.
