    Verdict

Caroubier is taken to stop the winning run of Vortex, with Musical Gift best of the rest in this class D handicap. Vortex has paid the penalty for his recent purple patch, rising in the weights from 73 to 83 during his run of three successes, two of which came here, and only time will tell if that is too steep. If not, then he will make a bold bid to defy topweight, but Caroubier has hit form at the right time and is taken to follow up his recent course and distance victory. The four-year-old was the clear form-pick in that claimer at Southwell, and took some to get going. Once he did though, he was driven clear to score easily under Jamie Spencer who significantly keeps the ride, even though Caroubier has since been claimed by John Gallagher. A winner off a higher mark at Southwell last May, he does not look badly treated and can follow up. Musical Gift landed a maiden here the time before last and was then outpaced on Lingfield's Polytrack. He will appreciate the return to this slower surface and can make his presence felt, but Caroubier makes the most appeal and is the selection.
