In depth

Verdict

A truly dreadful race to start the Thirsk card, with few of the runners in any sort of form. Brilliantrio is better than most of these on her day, and gets a tentative vote ahead of Royal Windmill, See Ya Maite and Sennen Cove. Brilliantrio won a Chester claimer last year, and started this campaign in promising fashion, finishing third to Mister Sweets in a turf handicap at Southwell which has worked out really well. This quirky filly has by and large failed to live up to that form since then, but it is hard to envisage her finding an easier opportunity than this, and she is the obvious selection. Many of the others have a good deal to find with the selection at the weights, but a couple who have performed well recently include Royal Windmill, who ran very well in a claimer at Musselburgh last time and would have a major chance if able to reproduce that form. Sennen Cove was a runner-up at Musselburgh in March, and hails from a stable in good form so is another to consider, along with see Ya Maite who has a lot to do at the weights but ran well on his penultimate start at Newcastle. Still, the safest option has to be Brilliantrio, and she gets the vote.
