In depth

Verdict

A competitive little race in which Bobby Charles rates as a speculative selection ahead of Baan and St Savarin. John Scargill's gelding is likely to be a few points bigger than he should be on account of the fact that he hails from an unfashionable yard, and having shown considerably better form on artifical rather than turf surfaces, there is an obvious opportunity in a valuable race. Baan ran in the Lingfield Classic trial although he appears not to have trained on despite the handicapper offering some respite. St Savarin has struggled since the handicapper took action for a success at Haydock. The hold-up performer has the ability to win a race of this nature although the stable is not in the greatest of form at present. Heathyards Pride has to win off his highest ever mark but their was no fluke about his recent Wolverhampton success as that had followed a three-month absence from the track. Lake Poet has place claims although he finds winning difficult. Credit has it to do following a spell over hurdles. A headscratcher for punters and Bobby Charles is nominated at a price.
