Verdict

With 18 runners lining up over the minimum trip, races do not come much more competitive than this. Add in the unknown equation of the effect of the draw and finding the winner is even more difficult. A low draw is often an advantage in big-field sprints at Gosforth Park but when the ground rides soft those drawn high tend to have the advantage, so it impossible to gauge which side will come out on top with the going forecast to be on the soft side of good. It may pay to side with one drawn low and one drawn high, leaving alone those with a middle draw. Among those with a low draw worthy of a mention are all-weather winners Ronnie From Donny and Whinhill House, who race at opposite ends of the handicap, Tim Easterby's reappearing Magic Myth and Chris Thornton's Quicks The Word, who ran well in nursery company last term. Of those drawn high another Easterby horse Dazzling Bay, the mount of Kevin Darley, recent all-weather winners Sea The World and Chico Guapo and Vanished, drawn next to the far side fence, all merit a mention but the selection goes to River Falcon. Jim Goldie's colt was lightly raced as a juvenile so is open to more improvement than most of his rivals, has the assistance of Kieren Fallon and the stable has made a fair start to the season. He gets the nod from stall 17.
