    Verdict

Henrietta Knight's Ludlow winner Harris Bay heads the 17 runners for the second division of the bumper but has more to do under his penalty today and may struggle to give weight away all round so we look elsewhere and give another chance to The Thunderer, who gets the vote over some interesting newcomers. Alan King's stoutly bred Itsa Legend, the Philip Hobbs-trained Jarod, a son of Scribe, and the Venetia Williams-trained Winter Star are all newcomers worth a second look beforehand. However, those with form set a fair standard with Harris Bay and Lord Gale, a fair second on his debut at Uttoxeter on Boxing Day, arguably the pick of them but we prefer to take a chance with The Thunderer. Nicky Henderson's gelding was made favourite for his debut at Ascot in December but ran no sort of race, beaten a long way out. The son of Terimon is surely better than that effort would suggest and, given his trainer's fine record at this track, The Thunderer may be worth giving another chance.
