In depth

Verdict

The vote here goes to Scotch Corner ahead of Dickens and Fireaway. This is a curious race. For one thing it looks fairly modest, and secondly, were it not for the fact that Scotch Corner disappointed badly at Ludlow last time, in a race where Dickens, who meets him on the same terms today, finished 11 lengths ahead of him. The latter has more of a chance of lasting home more strongly at this track - he was stepping up in trip at Ludlow. Turning to the others, and Fireaway's chasing efforts have yet to match his hurdling ones, but he has bits of form and should be competitive at this level, while Starshipenterprise needs to improve on the bare level of his chasing form to date if he is to feature. A bit of a headscratcher, then, and we feel inclined to give the selection one more chance.
