Monash Lad gets the vote over Attila's Peintre and Mango Masher in what is a moderate start to proceedings. It is almost a year since Monash Lad last ran on the Flat, and he has been out of luck over hurdles since joining Kelly Marks. However, he did win twice in succession on the level for Mark Tompkins last summer, and as he is proven on fast ground, he is taken to come out on top, with two recent runs over timber having sharpened him up. Attila's Peintre is much less experienced than the selection, but was only just touched off in a Hamilton claimer the time before last, and has blinkers on for the first time, so is one of the more interesting contenders. Mango Masher has been steadily upped in trip without success, but takes a drop in grade and has Jamie Spencer on board for the first time. He is another for the short-list, which in truth could fit on the back of a postage stamp, and for the winner we return to Monash Lad.
