Great Britain’s Liam Heath and Jon Schofield have won a silver medal in the men’s 200m kayak doubles at the Olympic Games.
The duo, who improved from winning bronze at London 2012, finished in 32.368 seconds but were beaten to the top prize by Spanish pair Saul Craviotto and Cristian Toro on Thursday.
It seemed Heath and Schofield may have to settle for bronze again but, with 50m remaining, they powered past Lithuania.
"We saw the Spanish were slightly ahead," Heath said upon returning to dry land. "Our race was on the other side of the course.
"It's such a fast race. You cross the line and everyone else crosses the line and you've just got to wait for the judges to pick up the first to finish and then put it up on the board."
Schofield said: "I threw a lot of water in the air. The last Olympics I smashed these paddles in half.
"I was reminded before this race that they are too expensive to do that again. I don't know how much they cost."
"We'll have a slice of cake tonight," Schofield added, the day after his team-mate's birthday. "But he's racing again and he's got a great chance in the K1 so we'll be keeping it low-key for now."
