Aaron Rodgers: Green Bay Packers quarterback set to play for franchise this season

The Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers are moving closer to an agreement that would result in the quarterback playing for the team this season, according to an ESPN report.

The agreement would void the final year (2023) of Rodgers' deal and would have terms in place that would allow him to leave after the 2021 season, if he remains disenchanted with the Packers.

ESPN added that Rodgers - who led the Packers to Super Bowl success in 2011 - remained in California on Monday.

The news outlet's sources said both sides hope to finish the deal soon. Green Bay's veterans report to training camp on Tuesday with the first practice scheduled for Wednesday.

The NFL Network also reported on Monday that Rodgers is planning to play for the Packers this season.

Team president Mark Murphy and general manager Brian Gutekunst were among Packers executives who met with shareholders on Monday at Lambeau Field.

Rodgers, 37, has stayed away from the team, including skipping mandatory minicamp, generating months-long speculation about where he would play in 2021, if at all.

His last public comments came early this month when he said he had been devoting time this offseason to his mental health and spiritual self.

Gutekunst, the source of Rodgers' reported ire since the general manager drafted QB Jordan Love in 2020 without speaking with Rodgers first, expressed optimism.

"We have been working tirelessly with Aaron Rodgers and his reps to resolve the issues he raised this offseason and remain hopeful for a positive outcome," Gutekunst told shareholders on Monday.

Rodgers, the NFL's reigning MVP, has played 16 seasons with Green Bay.

"We want him back, we're committed to him for 2021 and beyond," Murphy told shareholders, adding that the standoff has been a "challenging situation, but let's not forget all the great things he's done."
