Free agent Zach Miller will return to the Chicago Bears next season on a one-year deal that will pay him $458,000 even if he never takes the field, as expected.
Miller dislocated his left knee making a catch in the end zone at New Orleans in October 2017. The TD catch was overturned via replay.
Miller was taken from the field and directly to an area hospital for emergency surgery. Because of arterial damage, Miller was at risk of losing part of his left leg.
Miller said he was told by doctors he was "one wrong turn" from amputation. His recovery is progressing, but whether he can play football again is uncertain.
The Bears added incentives to his contract to boost the total value of the deal to around $800,000 if he's able to play in a game in 2018.
Miller, 33, joins a depth chart bolstered by the addition of big-ticket free agent Trey Burton from the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2017, the Bears drafted tight end Adam Shaheen with the 45th overall pick.
