Solomon Wilcots says Josh Rosen is best quarterback in Draft

Former NFL safety Solomon Wilcots has told Sky Sports his top quarterback in this year's Draft is UCLA's Josh Rosen.

As part of our continued build up to the 2018 NFL Draft, the former Bengals, Vikings and Steelers defensive back spoke to Neil Reynolds on the 2018 NFL Draft Preview.

Among many other topics, they discussed who should be the choice for the Cleveland Browns with the number one overall pick. Wilcots emphasised that's it's not necessarily about talent, but about the right fit.

"It’s not about who is the best," he said. "It’s who Cleveland thinks is the best quarterback for them and in terms of the system they are going to run."

"I remember John Elway going way ahead of Dan Marino. They were both great players but one team thought John Elway was the best for them."
Dan Marino.

In the 1983 NFL Draft, Elway was taken with the number one overall pick. Marino made it all the way to the 27th pick, but both enjoyed Hall-of-Fame worthy careers in their respective situations.

While Sam Darnold, Josh Allen, and more recently Baker Mayfield have been speculated to land in Cleveland, Wilcots argued a different signal-caller would be his choice at the top.

"I believe the best of these three quarterbacks - and I look at it in the immediate and long-term - is Josh Rosen, Wilcots added."

With the 2018 NFL Draft just days away, we will have all bases covered on Sky Sports as the best players in college football have their fate determined.

"He's more of a pure pocket passer. He's very bright in terms of his bandwidth to consume information and translate it and quickly turn it into productive moments on the football field.

"I think he's more of a complete quarterback that's ready to play right now than some of the other guys - not that those other guys will not be good with their respective teams."

Over the past few weeks, Rosen's stock has been falling, mainly because of question marks about his outspoken personality and whether or not he 'loves the game'.

However, when Wilcots and Reynolds discussed the trades that are expected early and often in the first round, it became clear there will be teams willing to overspend on the most important position in football.

We've already seen the Indianapolis Colts take advantage of the desperation for quarterbacks by giving up the third overall pick for the sixth and acquiring two second-round picks in this draft and one next year in the process.

Who else is open for business?

NFL Draft: Five teams needing QBs

With the 2018 NFL Draft fast approaching, we pick out the five most QB needy teams heading into draft day on Thursday.

"I think [it will be] the Cleveland Browns at the number four spot, if they decide to go ahead and take a quarterback at number one," Wilcots said.

"They are going to get a lot of telephone calls from teams wanting to move up into the top five trying to get ahead of the Denver Broncos for one of the top four quarterbacks on the board."

On the flip side, Wilcots picked out two teams in the position to move up if they have a particular target in mind.

"I think the Patriots are in business to be able to do that," he said.

"But the team armed with the most draft picks that will allow them to make that jump and still have a strong desire to get into the top five, for me it would be the Buffalo Bills"

Lamar Jackson.

New England have the 23rd, 31st, 43rd and 63th overall picks, and recent reports have suggested they are targeting Tom Brady's successor in either Rosen or Lamar Jackson.

Buffalo are in dire need of a new face of the franchise, and might have the ammunition to do it with six picks inside the top 100 including the 12th and 22nd selections in the first round.

In reality, every team - and their fans - will believe they can turn around their team's success by the end of the weekend.

"Many of the NFL fans hope to be able to get that one franchise player that’s going to turn around their fortunes," Wilcots told Sky Sports.

"Maybe you have a draft like the New Orleans Saints did one year ago where they had the offensive rookie of the year at running back and the defensive rookie of the year at defensive back."

Both Alvin Kamara and Marshon Lattimore took the league by storm last year as the Saints barely missed the NFC Championship Game. Just one or two stars can make a huge difference.

"So, if you can have a great draft it really does change the fortunes of your team."

All three days of the NFL Draft are exclusively live on Sky Sports with opening night getting underway from 12.30am on Friday, April 27 on Sky Sports Action and Sky Sports Mix.
