Tom Brady has taken to Instagram to express his thanks to those connected with New England Patriots, who suffered a shock defeat to Philadelphia Eagles in last Sunday's Super Bowl in Minnesota.
The quarterback has contested eight Super Bowls in 17 seasons, five of which have ended in success.
Looking back on his team's 41-33 defeat by the Eagles, Brady said: "It has taken me a few days to reflect on our SB loss as well as the great season our team had.
"There are many emotions when you come up short of your goal. And they are all part of learning and growing in this journey of life.
"Learning turns everything into a positive. And the number one feeling I have had the past four days is gratitude.
"Gratitude to my team-mates for the incredible effort given all season. Gratitude toward my coaches for the effort and sacrifice they make. Gratitude to the NEP organization for supporting us on our very challenging and difficult journey.
"Gratitude to Philadelphia Eagles for bringing out the best in us and being gracious winners. Gratitude toward our fans who showed up every week to cheer us on and commit their time and energy and love and support to what our goals are.
"And gratitude to my family and friends who continue to love and support my dreams."
Brady, who won the NFL's Most Valuable Player award for a third time, intends to continue in 2018, having reached his 40th birthday in August of last year.
Brady's Instagram post came the morning after the Boston Herald published a story by columnist Ron Borges which claimed Brady was seeking a contract similar to Jimmy Garoppolo's, and that he would skip organised team activities if it was not forthcoming. The Herald later took the story down from its website.
Earlier this week, the San Francisco 49ers granted Garoppolo a five-year $137.5m deal that includes $74m in guarantees.
