Odell Beckham Jr will have surgery on his broken ankle and is expected to miss the rest of the season, according to his coach at the New York Giants.

The 24-year-old suffered the injury during Sunday's loss to the Los Angeles Chargers and his loss will be a huge blow to the struggling Giants, who have made an 0-5 start to the 2017 campaign.

Coach Ben McAdoo told reporters on Monday: "I spoke to Odell after the game.

"It is a sad situation. It's fair to say his season is over."

Beckham suffered the injury during the fourth quarter of Sunday's match and was clearly in a great deal of pain as he was taken off the field.

An explosive playmaker, he has made a huge impact since he was drafted 12th in the 2014 draft, and he has been named to the Pro Bowl in all three of his previous seasons in the NFL.
