Running back Adrian Peterson has agreed terms to a two-year, $7m deal with the New Orleans Saints, following 10 years with the Minnesota Vikings.

Peterson spent the last year recovering from a torn meniscus in his right knee, following an injury in week two. He returned in week 15 against the Indianapolis Colts, but only made six rushing attempts, fumbling once.

The Vikings decided not to exercise a one-year option on Peterson's contract, which would have valued the 32-year-old at $18m for the 2017 season.

Following the release of next year's schedule, there may be added motivation for Peterson's move to New Orleans. The Saints will start their season with a road game against the Vikings.

Seven-time Pro Bowler Peterson, who also won Most Valuable Player in 2012, has been one of the most high-profile free agents of the 2017 off-season. He has worked out with both the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

However, with a strong 2017 running back draft class, coupled with the amount of available RBs in free agency, Peterson failed to agree terms with either side, before settling with the Saints.

Last year, the Vikings started well without Peterson, racing to a 5-0 record, before losing eight of the next eleven and missing the play-offs.

British NFL fans can now look forward to seeing Peterson back in the UK. The New Orleans Saints play the Miami Dolphins at Wembley on October 1st. Peterson scored two touchdowns and rushed for 140 yards in his only other Wembley appearance, when the Vikings beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 34-27 in September 2013.

Peterson would become the Saints' third signing this off-season, following the arrivals of linebacker Manti Te'o and quarterback Chase Daniel.
