Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is set to become an unrestricted free agent on March 9.

The Vikings are not taking up their 2017 option on Peterson's contract, potentially ending a 10-year association with the player they drafted in 2007.

He could still return to the franchise next season but would have to accept a renegotiated deal, while the league's other 31 clubs will also have the chance to step in and sign him.

Peterson was due to make $18m (£14.5m) next year but has only managed one full season in the last three and carried the ball just 37 times for 72 yards in three games last year.

"Adrian is an important part of the Minnesota Vikings organisation," said Vikings general manager Rick Spielman.

"We will continue to have conversations with his representatives and leave our future options open while determining what is best for both parties moving forward."

Peterson was selected with the seventh pick of the 2007 NFL Draft and has gone on to win seven selections to the Pro Bowl.
