The late American businessman, Art Modell, owned Cleveland Browns for all of 35 years and was instrumental in the growth of the sport itself, but he made the controversial decision to move the Browns to Baltimore in the mid-1990s.

A contentious character in Cleveland, Modell ultimately had to forfeit the Browns and leave them in the city, but was allowed to take his staff and team with him to form the Ravens and compete as an expansion team in the 1996 season.

Baltimore Ravens quickly soared to success and won the Super Bowl by the end of the 2000 season, whilst Cleveland Browns had to re-join the league again in 1999 as an expansion team and have struggled ever since.

With fearsome talents like linebacker Ray Lewis and defensive coordinator Marvin Lewis running the show, the Ravens developed a reputation for dominant defensive play - they set a league record in 2000 by holding the opposition to an astoundingly small total of 165 points in the regular season.

Such dominance culminated in a championship-clinching victory over New York Giants in Super Bowl 35 that year. They would only have to wait another 12 years for their second league title in Super Bowl 47 when they beat San Francisco 49ers 34-31, led by one of their greatest ever quarterbacks, Joe Flacco.
