Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was arrested on Monday and charged with multiple offences.

Jones, 33, faces misdemeanour charges of assault, disorderly conduct and obstructing official business after an incident in the Ohio city.

Hamilton County authorities said Jones stood accused of pushing and poking someone in the eye before struggling with police officers during his arrest and later spitting on a nurse while being booked.

He appeared in court for the first time on Tuesday and denied all the charges made against him.

Jones has been with the Bengals for the last seven seasons but this is not his first run-in with law enforcement.

He was suspended back in 2007 for an entire season after NFL commissioner Roger Goodell grew tired with his behaviour, citing 10 incidents that required him to be interviewed by police.

Jones was traded by his then employers the Tennessee Titans and he spent a season with the Dallas Cowboys and a year out of the league before linking up with the Bengals in 2010.

Bengals spokesman Jack Brennan said the club is aware of the incident, but by policy, doesn't comment on unresolved legal matters.
