Ryan Fitzpatrick has regained the New York Jets quarterback job after Geno Smith was ruled out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate knee ligament.
Smith replaced the benched Fitzpatrick in Sunday's clash with the Baltimore Ravens, and threw an early 69-yard touchdown pass to Quincy Enunwa, but he was injured in the second quarter when he was sacked by linebacker Matt Judon.
Fitzpatrick came in to relieve Smith and completed nine of his 14 pass attempts for 120 yards and a touchdown as the Jets won 24-16.
Smith underwent scans after the game and the results showed the severity of the injury, leaving Fitzpatrick to take over a role he lost after starting their first six games.
"We had some tests run and it came back positive. They said he has a torn ACL and he'll be done for the year," coach Todd Bowles said.
"He caught a bad break two years in a row. Obviously I'm sure he'll bounce back from it, but it's a tough part of the business.
"You hear that and it's tough luck for the kid and you go from there. Fitzpatrick finished the game up and we're going from there with Fitz."
Bowles said there would need to be more discussion about Fitzpatrick's back-up, with only the untested Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg behind him on the depth chart.
Petty has only just returned to practice after a shoulder injury and Bowles said: "I'll discuss with the coaches and consider the game plan."
