New York Giants kicker Josh Brown will not travel to London for their Twickenham game after details emerged surrounding a domestic violence case.
The Giants arrive in the capital on Friday ahead of their game with the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, but 37-year-old Brown will not be in their party following the disclosure of information regarding a 2015 incident for which he was not prosecuted.
SportsNet New York claim to have obtained journal entries from Brown in which he revealed the extent of the abuse he had inflicted on his then-wife, with Giants owner John Mara later confirming the player had confessed to abusing her.
In a statement, the Giants said: "Josh Brown will not travel with the team to London.
"In light of the news reports regarding the documents released by the State of Washington yesterday, we think it makes sense to review this newly disclosed information and to revisit this issue following our trip to London.
"The Giants do not condone or excuse any form of domestic violence. Josh has acknowledged that he has issues in his life and has been working on these issues through therapy and counselling for a long period of time.
"We remain supportive of Josh and his efforts."
Though he was not prosecuted, Brown was suspended for one game by the NFL at the start of this year after the league conducted their own investigation.
However, the NFL has now claimed they were not privy to all of the facts regarding Brown's case and are set to revisit it.
"NFL investigators made repeated attempts - both orally and in writing - to obtain any and all evidence and relevant information in this case from the King County Sheriff's Office," a statement carried on NFL.com read.
"Each of those requests was denied and the Sheriff's Office declined to provide any of the requested information, which ultimately limited our ability to fully investigate this matter.
"We concluded our own investigation, more than a year after the initial incident, based on the facts and evidence available to us at the time and after making exhaustive attempts to obtain information in a timely fashion.
"It is unfortunate that we did not have the benefit or knowledge of these materials at the time.
"In light of the release of these documents yesterday, we will thoroughly review the additional information and determine next steps in the context of the NFL Personal Conduct Policy."
This comes two years after the Ray Rice situation, where the NFL's original two-game ban against the running back was followed by an indefinite suspension following the release of shocking footage of the then-Baltimore Raven attacking his wife.
Rice won an appeal to overturn his indefinite ban from the league but the Super Bowl winner has not been signed by a team since.
Giants owner Mara was unwilling to make a declaration about Brown's long-term future.
"I want to get all the information first, I'm certainly disturbed by what we've read," he told radio station WFAN.
"He's admitted to us that he's abused his wife in the past. I think what's a little unclear is the extent of that. What we've read about is obviously disturbing and we think we need to gather some more information before we make a final decision.
"But we certainly had enough to make us believe making him inactive this week was the right decision."
