Quarterback Colin Kaepernick has made the final 53-man roster confirmed by the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday.

Kaepernick's future with the franchise had come into question after his high-profile and controversial decision not to stand when America's national anthem is played before games.

The 28-year-old has faced criticism for staying seated, or taking a knee, when The Star Spangled Banner is played as a protest against the treatment of black people and other minorities across the United States.

"I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of colour," Kaepernick said during pre-season.

"To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."

But he has received support from some quarters, including from 49ers coach Chip Kelly, and a good performance in their final preseason game on Thursday has cemented Kaepernick into a roster spot.

Blaine Gabbert seems their most likely starter and Kelly has also retained the services of a third quarterback in Christian Ponder as well as Kaepernick.
