Cincinnati's slim hopes of making the NFL play-offs faded further on Sunday after standout wide receiver A.J. Green and running back Gio Bernard went down with possible season-ending injuries in their 16-12 loss to Buffalo.

Green was carted off after injuring his right hamstring early in the game against the Bills at Paul Brown Stadium in Cincinnati. He is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday amid fears a tear will be revealed.

Team-mate Adam Jones said he felt "sick" as the extent of Green's injury became apparent.

"The best receiver in the league. If he's down, how do you think it's going to affect the team?" the cornerback said.

Coach Marvin Lewis shed little light on the injury: "I don't know when he can be back, but he has a hamstring injury, I can tell you that."

Five-time Pro Bowler Green has 964 receiving yards this season, second only to Atlanta's Julio Jones.

Multiple reports say Bernard has been ruled out for the season with a torn ACL in his left knee, though the team have yet to confirm the news.

When Bernard got hurt is unclear as he was in the game until the last minute as the running back on passing downs and caught four passes in the final two minutes.

According to WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, he was spotted being consoled by team-mates and coaches in the locker room after the game.

Bernard is the Bengals' change-of-pace back and can catch balls out of the backfield in addition to being used as a traditional rusher. He has 91 carries for 337 yards and two rushing touchdowns this year, along with 39 catches for 336 yards and a receiving touchdown.

The Bengals were already struggling to make it to the post-season and Sunday's loss dropped them to 3-6-1 with six games remaining.
