Gregg Popovich is unsure whether he will be back coaching the San Antonio Spurs next season.

Popovich's most recent contract extension, signed in 2014, runs out at the end of the season and he turns 70 later this month.

He has been in charge of the Spurs since 1996 and since taking the role has won five NBA championships, the last coming just before he signed his latest deal in 2014.

Popovich has committed to coaching the United States men's basketball team for the next two summers, taking in the 2019 FIBA World Cup in China and the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

But he would only say "I don't know the answer" when asked about his Spurs future after the 105-101 win over the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday.

Popovich said he had spoken about his options with Spurs president RC Buford and Buford was quoted as saying: "He'll coach as long as he wants to coach."

His decision could be swayed by time pressures of the USA Basketball role, with the World Cup finishing only a couple of weeks before 2019 NBA training camps get under way.

According to Elias Sports Bureau, only three men have coached past the age of 70 - Bill Bertka, Hubie Brown and Larry Brown, who gave Popovich his start with the Spurs as an assistant coach more than three decades ago.
