English rider Josh Edmondson claimed his first win as a professional on stage three of the Tour d’Azerbaidjan on Friday.
The 22-year-old Yorkshireman, who rides for Belgian team An Post-Chain Reaction having left Team Sky at the end of last season, escaped from the peloton with a late attack and hung on to win by one second.
The result lifts him from 11th to fifth in the general classification, although he is 3min 49sec adrift of leader Primoz Roglic, of Slovenia.
Edmondson tweeted afterwards: “Wasn't expecting that to work! Normally my daft attacks don't work out. Bloody glad it did though!”
The five-day race ends on Sunday.
