Chris Froome stayed 3min 37sec behind Vuelta a Espana leader Nairo Quintana after both riders finished safely in the peloton on a 16th stage won by Jean-Pierre Drucker.

Drucker (BMC Racing) claimed the first Grand Tour stage victory of his career by out-sprinting runner-up Rudiger Selig (Bora-Argon) and third-placed Nikias Arndt (Giant-Alpecin) in Peniscola.

Froome (Team Sky) followed in 17th, two places ahead of Quintana (Movistar), to ensure he remains second in the general classification with five stages to go.

Esteban Chaves (Orica-BikeExchange) also crossed the line in the main bunch to stay 3min 57sec down on Quintana in third, while Britain's Simon Yates (Orica-BikeExchange) held on to fifth.

Tinkoff's Daniele Bennati (Tinkoff) had threatened to thwart the sprint teams with an attack 2km out, but he was caught with 200m to go and Drucker took full advantage.

Drucker said: "I suffered a lot the last days, especially the day on Aubisque [stage 14], but I always kept believing in the sprint stages. I did a good Tour of Burgos and I was confident in my sprint. It's nice. It's cool to have a victory in a Grand Tour."

The Vuelta pauses for its second rest day on Tuesday but resumes on Wednesday with a 177.5km 17th stage ending with a summit finish at Camins del Penygolosa in Llucena. Find out more about the route in our race guide and follow the action with our live blog from 1pm BST.
