Chris Froome stayed second overall behind Vuelta a Espana leader Nairo Quintana after the favourites called a truce on a rolling 13th stage won by Valerio Conti.

With back-to-back summit finishes looming on Saturday and Sunday, all of the red jersey contenders and their teams decided to save their legs on Friday's 213.4km marathon and the peloton consequently ambled to the finish 34min 54sec behind the breakaway.

It means Quintana (Movistar) remains 54 seconds ahead of Froome (Team Sky) and 1min 5sec in front of third-placed Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) going into stage 14, which crests three category-one climbs and then ends with a special-category summit finish on the Col d'Aubisque in the French Pyrenees.

Sunday's 15th stage tackles one category-three and one category-two climb ahead of a category-one summit finish at Aramon Formigal.

Conti (Lampre-Merida), meanwhile, formed part of a 12-man breakaway on stage 13 but moved into a lone lead with 17km to go and pulled away to win by 55 seconds from runner-up Danilo Wyss (BMC Racing) and third-placed Sergey Lagutin (Katusha).

Conti said: "We knew that the breakaway would go to the end because we had a huge advantage.

"I felt really good; it was the right stage for me; it was the right breakaway. It's my first victory in a Grand Tour and it's a great feeling."
