Mikel Landa takes Giro del Trentino lead after winning stage two

Team Sky’s Mikel Landa took the overall lead of the Giro del Trentino in Italy by climbing to a solo victory on stage two.

The 26-year-old Spaniard attacked out of a thinned-down peloton about 2km from the summit finish in Anras and won by four seconds from runner-up Sergey Firsanov (Gazprom-RusVelo) and 13 seconds from third-placed Damiano Cunego (Nippo-Vini Fantini).

Landa received 10 bonus seconds for the victory and now leads second-placed Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) by 10 seconds in the general classification, with Firsanov five seconds further adrift in third.

Landa told teamsky.com: "This result is more than I expected. The team did some really good work for me and I felt really good. We want to try and win this race.

"I'm really happy right now, but for sure, some riders will try and attack tomorrow because the last climb is close to the finish line. We have the hardest climb of the race on the last day as well, so I expect more attacks there."

Landa's main pre-race rival for overall victory, Astana's Vincenzo Nibali, was dropped early in the short final climb and has now fallen out of contention for the purple jersey.

The four-day race continues on Thursday with a 204.6km third stage from Sillian to Mezzolombardo, which ends with an 11km climb and then a 14km descent to the finish.
