Team Sky have announced the signing of Spanish climber Mikel Landa from Astana.

The 25-year-old will join the British squad on January 1.

Landa established himself as a grand tour contender and one of the most coveted riders in the sport by winning two stages and finishing third overall at this year's Giro d'Italia.

He then further enhanced his reputation by winning a stage and playing a key role in Fabio Aru's overall victory at the Vuelta a Espana earlier this month.

Landa told teamsky.com: "Team Sky is one of the best teams in the world and this is a great opportunity for me. The team has an excellent reputation for being professional and methodical, and I know I can continue to develop and improve with their guidance.

"Team Sky has an excellent group of riders and I'm looking forward to joining up with them next year. I'll do everything I can to bring success to the team."

Team Sky principal Sir Dave Brailsford said: "He has shown that he is one of the best climbers in the world, but the next thing is, can he lead a team and can he lead a grand tour?

"He is only young, only 25, but he speaks very good English and comes from a good background, and we are very excited about the opportunity to have a young rider who we can hopefully develop over the coming years."

Team Sky have not revealed the length of contract Landa has signed.

He is their sixth signing for the new season, following Alex Peters, Gianni Moscon, Michal Golas, Danny van Poppel and Benat Intxausti.
