Tour de France points leader Marcel Kittel has been forced to quit the race after a heavy crash on Stage 17.
Kittel, who was on course for the green jersey after sprinting to five stage wins, was involved in a pile-up 20km into the mountainous 183km stage from La Mure to Serre Chavalier.
The German's shoe was replaced and he continued with an ice pack on his right shoulder, but he was dropped on the first of several punishing climbs and later admitted defeat.
Australian Michael Matthews takes over from the Quick-Step Floors rider at the head of the points classification.
Kittel is the latest big-name casualty of this year's race, with Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas and Richie Porte among the others to abandon.
