After a beautiful approach shot at the seventh, Open champion Henrik Stenson came inches away from a hole-in-one on the eighth as he led the European Ryder Cup charge in the afternoon fourballs alongside Justin Rose.
The Swede and Olympic gold medallist Rose were looking to lead by example as Europe tried to recover from the shock of being whitewashed in the opening session of the 41st Ryder Cup.
After surrendering their unbeaten record to Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed in the morning foursomes, they hit back in style against the same opposition.
At the par three 8th, Stenson narrowly missed the cup by a matter of inches after driving 191 yards.
