Colin Montgomerie says Danny Willett will suffer at the hands of the American Ryder Cup fans following his brother's controversial comments in a magazine article.
Willett's brother Pete criticised the culture of American golf supporters and also mocked Love's players in his piece, causing both Willett and European captain Darren Clarke to quickly distance themselves from the work, with Clarke insisting the views were "not reflective of Team Europe".
But Montgomerie believes the damage is done and that Willett will face the fury of home fans whenever he takes to the course at Hazeltine, Minnesota this weekend.
"How can he possibly think this was going to help his brother or help Europe win this Ryder Cup?" said Montgomerie, who forced marshals to eject a heckler during the fiery 1999 tournament at Brookline and often bore the brunt of abuse from American galleries during his career.
"How could it possibly be that somebody could think that would happen?
"He obviously has no idea, the brother, what it's like to be out here and play in the Ryder Cup in America. It can be nasty and it can only be more nasty for his brother now and for the rest of Team Europe.
"Playing over here in a cauldron, which it will be on Friday, it will be loud, bordering on aggressive and it can only fire up the Americans and we don't want to do that.
"This was the wrong time at the wrong place - wrong everything!"
