Ryan Moore came within an inch of achieving the rarest feat in golf on the third day at Riviera Country Club - an albatross hole-in-one.
Taking dead aim at the pin on the 286-yard par-four 10th, Moore hammered an arrow-straight drive that pitched a few feet short of the green and started tracking towards the hole once on the putting surface.
It looked in all the way, but his ball did not catch enough of the right lip to head south. And to add insult to injury, the contours and slick pace of the green ensured Moore would be playing his second from the run-off area to the left.
Angel Cabrera, whose group had marked their balls before retreating to allow Moore, Retief Goosen and Graham DeLaet to play up, certainly saw the funny side - as did Moore as he tossed his driver away in mock disgust.
But the American was seething a few moments later having putted up the slope to four feet and then missing his attempt for birdie to trudge to the 11th tee with only a par-four on his card.
