Miguel Angel Jimenez has given his backing to new European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke and wants to feature in the side next autumn.
The three-time Europe vice-captain had been in contention to replace Paul McGinley at Hazeltine next year, but missed out in favour of Clarke in a 'unaimous decision' by the five-man selection panel on Wednesday.
While the Spaniard admits he had hoped to be chosen to lead Europe in their attempt at a record fourth consecutive win, Jimenez is convinced the Northern Irishman will impress in the role.
“Disappointing? A little bit,” the 51-year-old told Sky Sports 4. “I’ve been there so many years on the Tour. This is my 27th season, I've played seven Ryder Cups and been vice-captain. Of course I accept it (the decision).
“I think I’ve done a lot for the Tour through all these years and it’s a little disappointing not being captain, but I feel happy on the other hand for Darren, because he will make a very good job.
“I will be behind you Darren, don’t worry. All the decisions you’re going to make for the Ryder Cup will be good and I’ll be behind you.”
The European Tour veteran has made a strong start to the year with a solid tied-20th finish in Abu Dhabi and ending tied-seventh at last week's True Thailand Classic, following it up by hitting a one-under opening round 70 at this week's Hero Indian Open.
The world No 45 is still a prominent member of the European Tour and hasn't ruled out becoming the oldest player in Ryder Cup history in Minnesota.
“If I’m still playing well, if I’m hitting the ball as far as the way I’m hitting it then of course I will have a chance,” Jimenez added. “Anyway or how to be part of a Ryder Cup is always nice.
“Obviously to play it is better but next year I’ll be 52, but you never know. The way that I’m playing, maybe I’ll be there with my clubs too!”
The Spaniard opened at Delhi GC with nine consecutive pars, but dropped shots at the par-four tenth and 16th. Jimenez fired three birdies in a row on the back nine but feels his performance deserved better than one-under.
“A little bit frustrating, as I played very well. Hit so many very good shots and had a lot of chances for birdie that didn’t happen.
“Missed a birdie on the 17th and missed another on the 18th. In a way under-par is always good, but the more under-par the better!”
