Defending Masters champion Danny Willett will play no part over the weekend after missing the cut at Augusta National.

The Englishman made a one-over-par 73 in his opening round but began his second with a quadruple-bogey eight and struggled to recover.

After a further two bogeys and a solitary birdie, Willett was six over for the tournament after 17 but made another, ultimately very costly, bogey at the last to take him to +7 and miss the cut by a shot.

"We hit a lot of good golf shots," Willett said. "We've hit a lot of good golf shots all year, but haven't gotten anything.

"Same as today, when you hit a few good ones you don't really make the most of it. And when you hit a couple bad ones, you get the worst score you could.

"There's a lot of good in there, it's just unfortunate, obviously week to week it doesn't matter, really. Unfortunately we are a results-based game and the results haven't quite been there.

"It would've been nice if we could kind of get a little bit of a break for the weekend, just to give us all a little more golf under our belts."

Despite his disappointment at the round and becoming the first reigning champion to miss the cut at Augusta since Mike Weir in 2004, Willett remained level-headed about the situation.

"You're still a Masters champion," he added. "There's still pressure that you put on yourself and that people put on you to kind of play well.

"It's been a tricky 12 months, but we haven't played great golf, but, by the same token if you look at the career that we've had, we've not really had a slump in form in two years.

"We've had two fabulous years. And when you have a little bit of a downturn and it feels like the world is coming to an end. So like I said, it would've been nice if we'd been given a little bit today by the golfing gods."
