Rory McIlroy looked to have hit a perfect approach into the par four 18th hole, only to see his ball hit the flag and bounce back off the green

Rory McIlroy's second round at the Masters came to an unfortunate ending as a huge bounce off the flagstick turned a birdie chance into a bogey.

McIlroy arrived on the 18th tee in buoyant mood after a birdie at 17 got him back to level par for the day, and the tournament, and he split the final fairway with a trademark, mammoth drive.

His short-iron second had McIlroy staring with intent as his ball was all over the flag, but it was too straight and cannoned off the pin and off the green, leaving the world No 2 a tricky up and down to save par.

McIlroy's sharp short game dug him out of trouble on several occasions in his opening 72, and his sublime touch was again evident as he pitched to inside six feet, but he misread the putt and trudged off to sign for a 73.

"It looked like it was going to be a tap-in birdie and I end up making five," he said afterwards. "It was two bad breaks because the wind then caught me out on the putt as well and made it go uphill."
