The 2016 Masters winner Danny Willett struggles on the first hole on day two at Augusta National

Danny Willett endured a horrific start to his second round at the Masters as he scrapped his way to a quadruple-bogey EIGHT at the opening hole.

The defending champion did well to card a one-over 73 on the first day after a six-six start, but he fared even worse in in cool, blustery conditions on day two and left himself a huge battle to survive the halfway cut.

Willett carved his drive right and had an awkward stance near the sand for his second, which bounded into the trees, and his third from the pine straw skipped over the green long and left.

A duffed chip failed to make the putting surface and rolled back down the slope, and he put too much into his next pitch and watched his ball dribble off the front of the green.

He finally found some short grass with his sixth shot as he chipped to six feet, but the putt missed the target and he tapped in for a woeful eight to slip to five over par for the tournament.
