A near-ace and a ridiculous birdie feature in the shots of the day from the opening round of the 81st Masters at Augusta National.

Charley Hoffman's birdie run on the back nine saw the American open up a four-shot lead in Georgia, where a number of players delivered magical moments along the closing stretch.

Bubba Watson drained a 90-foot monster on the 14th green and produced another remarkable birdie a couple of holes later on his way to an opening-round 74.

The par-three 16th delivered the day's best hopes of a hole-in-one, with Thomas Pieters firing a tight tee shot towards the flag and Rory McIlroy going all-so close to an Augusta ace.

McGirt drained an impressive putt on his way to grabbing second spot, while Fitzpatrick fired a cracking chip-in from off the green to help end the day under par.
