Rory McIlroy fired a superb seven-iron to within five feet of the hole as he turned around his Masters opening round

Rory McIlroy fired a brilliant tee shot on the 16th hole at Augusta to ignite his bid for a maiden Masters title.

The four-time major champion is chasing a green jacket that would complete a career Grand Slam and after a low-key start, the Northern Irishman got his opening round going down the stretch.

McIlroy was three-under par after 12 holes and without a birdie to his name before picking up a first gain of the day at the 13th and a second soon after at 15.

How things shape up at Augusta

With the wind in his sails, McIlroy stood on the 16th tee and pulled out a seven-iron to launch one of the best shots of the day.

The 27-year-old fired his tee shot within inches of the pin and the first hole-in-one of this year's tournament, the ball eventually came to rest about five feet from the flag and he tapped in for a birdie to move back to level par.

Pars at 17 and 18 ensured McIlroy finished the day in touch seven shots off the lead, but in touch with the rest of the chasing pack, who were all left trailing by Charley Hoffman's blistering 65.
