Danny Willett is in contention going in to Sunday at the Masters

Danny Willett carded a round of 72 to sit just three shots behind Masters leader Jordan Spieth and in contention for a maiden major title.

The 28-year-old from Sheffield is the best placed European after following rounds of 70 and 74 with a solid level par round that leaves him in the shake-up for what promises to be a thrilling Sunday at Augusta.

Three dropped shots in the final two holes from Spieth have given hope to plenty with Justin Rose (+3), Rory McIlroy (+2) and Lee Westwood (+1) all within striking distance but it is Willett who leads British hopes.

Four birdies from Willett showed all the battling qualities he will need if he is to make a run for a Green Jacket after contending at St Andrews for the Open last year before falling away in the final round.

"It was pretty good score and we have moved up the leaderboard which can never be bad," Willett told Sky Sports.

"We drove it great and put ourselves in position a lot - but we have played the par fives terribly all week so we need to convert on a few of those.

"Mid-to-long irons are really good and we are taking advantage on the par three's which a lot of people are finding tricky.

"It was a bit up and down but tied fifth going into the final day of the Masters is a pretty good place to be in."
