Jason Day had little trouble in wrapping up a wire-to-wire victory at the BMW Championship in Illinois by six shots and become world No 1 for the first time in his career.

Day did most of his damage on the opening two days, reaching halfway at an incredible 18 under, and even a couple of less impressive rounds on the weekend never looked like stopping him.

The Australian parred his first seven holes before making a birdie at the par-five eighth, but he gave that shot straight back at the ninth.

He picked up another shot at the 16th and moved to 22 under at the last, where a sublime pitch from the rough left him with a couple of feet for yet another birdie.

None of his biggest rivals was able to mount a serious Sunday challenge, Day extending his lead to seven at one point, and it would be left to youngster Daniel Berger to claim second place.

Berger claimed the most lucrative cheque of his career thanks to a superb back-nine performance at Conway Farms.

He struggled badly on the front-nine, reaching halfway at one over for the day, but Berger made three birdies on the way home to claim second spot on his own and move into the top 10 in the FedEx Cup play-off standings.

Like Berger, Scott Piercy needed a big week to get into the season-ending Tour Championship next week, and he managed to hold his nerve on Sunday after his round looked like falling apart.

Piercy dropped a shot at the fifth and double-bogeyed the sixth to go out in 38 and drop way down the field, and out of the play-offs, but he also produced some fine golf on the back-nine and snatched third place on the final green.

He had successive birdies at the 14th, 15th and 16th and added a fourth at the last, holing a 10-foot putt to move to 15 under and out of a tie for fourth.

That left JB Holmes, Rickie Fowler and soon to be former world No 1 Rory McIlroy to share fourth, with McIlroy holing a putt at the last to move to 14 under alongside the pair of American players.

But they were all left in Day's wake as he claimed a fourth win in his last six tournaments - his next challenge is to produce a good enough result at East Lake to win the $10m bonus as play-off champion. Last year's winner Billy Horschel failed to make the top-30 this time around.
