Jordan Spieth's display at The Barclays was alien-like, says Wayne Riley

Jordan Spieth's display was alien-like according to Sky Sports' Wayne Riley, as the world No 1 made an early exit from The Barclays.

Spieth, looking to bounce back from a season-worst 74 in the opening round, got off to a unsteady start with four bogeys in a five-hole stretch on the front nine and carded a double-bogey seven soon after reaching the turn on his way to a three-over 73.

The missed cut means Spieth will be replaced by Rory McIlroy as world No 1 when the new Official Golf World Rankings are released on Monday, with Riley, who followed Spieth's round as Sky Sports' live coverage from Plainfield Country Club, surprised by Spieth's uncharacteristically poor week.

Jordan Spieth will lose his world number one ranking after missing the cut at The Barclays, less than two weeks after replacing Rory McIlroy in top spot.

"It wasn't Jordan Spieth, it was an alien or someone else wasn't it?!" Riley told Sky Sports 4. "We've seen him miss putts, hit bad drives and play like a seven handicapper.

"We haven't seen him play like that in the US Open or other big tournaments this year, but it certainly wasn't him today."

Playing partner Bubba Watson holds a narrow one-shot lead after the second round thanks to a birdie at the last, with Riley impressed with how the world No 4 is looking heading in to the weekend.

"I don't know how he missed the cut last year because it's a course that really sets up well for Bubba Watson," Riley added.

"The fairways slope exactly how Bubba knows how to hit them and has all the shots. He's a magician around the golf course and the place sets up perfectly for him.

"There was a lot of 'Bubba Bubba booing' in the crowd today, but that's just the way of the American crowd who like to have a lot of fun.

"They love Bubba and he has to take the good with the bad - you don't want people silent out there. If they're yelling at him, it's because they're love him and making birdies which he was today."
