Tiger Woods says his "awful" putting was to blame for an opening-round 75 in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits.

The former world No 1 ended the day three-over par with five bogeys and two birdies, and is on a run of back-to-back missed cuts at majors following early exits at the US Open and Open Championship.

Woods said prior to the final major of the year that he hoped for more consistency in a bid to reach the end-of-season FedEx Cup play-offs, but incoherent reading of the greens has left the 14-time major champion with it all to do to make the cut.

"I hit it great today, but I made actually nothing," Woods, who has scored 27-over par for his last seven rounds at majors, said. "It's probably one of the worst putting rounds I've had in a very long time. But I hit it good today, so that's about it.

"I just had no feel at all for the speed (on the greens). It was awful. My speed was bad, hence speed determines line, so that was off. I either left them short or blew them by. I just didn't have the speed at all."

However, the 39-year-old was optimistic with other aspects of his game, claiming he had "complete control" of the golf ball throughout his round.

"I kept with the game plan, I struck it the way I wanted to pretty much all day, and I just never got a putt, I don't think I made one putt all day," he continued.

"The good news is I had complete control of the golf ball - even with these conditions as they got tougher, I was able to control it."

Woods was resigned to the fact his season could be over come Friday evening, but said there is still plenty of golf left for him to play as he bids to improve his ranking of 186th in the FedEx standings.

"The season is pretty much over very soon," Woods added. "But the year's not.

"I still can do things overseas, our next (PGA Tour) season is starting up, I have my tournament down in the Bahamas. There's plenty of golf to be played globally. The season, it is what it is, but calendar year I still have a lot of golf left."
