Steven Bowditch completed an impressive week with a comfortable four-stroke victory at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
The overnight survived a mediocre front nine before pulling clear with four back-nine birdies on his way to a five-under 64 at the TPC Four Seasons Resort, leaving Jimmy Walker, Charley Hoffman and Scott Pinckney having to settle for joint-second.
Bowditch, who got married at the course back in 2011, had found himself one over for the day when dropping a second shot of the round at the fifth, but reached the turn one under after picking up shots at the sixth and ninth.
The Australian’s lead was temporarily cut to two when Hoffman added a fifth birdie in seven holes at the 16th and Walker made a chip-in eagle at the same hole, but Bowditch made a gain of his own to move back three clear.
Walker picked up another shot at the 17th to move alongside Hoffman on 14 under for the week, before Bowditch extended his advantage by firing his tee-shot to 15 feet and rolling in the birdie putt.
With Bowditch under minimal pressure as he headed to the par-four last, the world No 127 struck his iron shot to the edge of the green and closed victory with a two-putt par.
Scott Pinckney posted three birdies on the back nine, holing his third shot from off the 15th green and sliding in a six-foot putt at the last to close a three under 66 and join the tie for second, with Zach Johnson posting the final round 63 to lie a further shot back.
“I haven’t played here in a while, but I’m starting to get more comfortable with the course,” Johnson told Sky Sports 4. “When I played the first four holes in one under I felt I could be aggressive and makes some putts.”
A back nine 30 from Brandt Snedeker saw him card a five under 64, while Dustin Johnson recovered from a quadruple-bogey at the sixth to end the day level par.
Masters champion Jordan Spieth felt in contention going in to the weekend within three of the lead, but a disappointing final round 79 saw him end the tournament with Jonas Blixt, Rory Sabbatini and veteran Jerry Kelly in a tie for 30th.
