The world No 417 produced a stunning four-under 67 during a weather-disrupted final day at Quail Hollow to get to 15 under and finish three strokes clear of nearest challenger Joel Dahmen.

World No 2 Justin Rose posted a three-under 68 to claim third spot and Paul Casey was in the group of four players a further two strokes back in tied-fourth, while two-time winner Rory McIlroy ended in a share of eighth after a closing 73.

"It feels like I'm in a dream!" Homa told Sky Sports. "I didn't know whether this day would ever come. It's cool to do it here because I love this place as much as any."

Three players began the day tied for the lead but Jason Dufner quickly slipped out of contention with back-to-back bogeys from the second, as Homa holed a six-foot birdie at the fifth and Dahmen - playing in the group ahead - made a 12-foot gain at the par-three next.

Dahmen posted a two-putt gain at the par-five seventh and Homa holed a 15-footer on the same hole to move the pair three clear of nearest challenge Rose, who birdied the seventh and rolled in a 10-footer at the driveable eighth to get to 10 under.

Homa reached the turn with a one-shot advantage when Dahmen bogeyed the ninth after finding the fairway bunker off the tee, before increasing his lead by converting a 15-footer at the par-five 10th and adding another from 12 feet at the next.

Dahmen bogeyed the 11th to slip four behind but picked up a shot at the reachable 14th to cut the lead to three just before play was suspended, with Homa making his five-foot putt for par when the final round resumed just over an hour later.

Homa added a two-putt birdie at the par-five 15th but carded his only bogey of the day at the next, before rolling in a 10-footer to save par at the 17th and sealing a life-changing victory with a two-putt par at the last.

Dufner found water twice at the par-four 18th on his way to a closing double-bogey, seeing him slip to nine under alongside Casey, Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler, while McIlroy was in contention until a treacherous run around the turn.

McIlroy three-putted the seventh after finding the par-five green in two and then three-putted for bogey at the ninth, before sliding further down the leaderboard by beginning his back-nine with a double-bogey seven.
