Kevin Kisner spurned a glorious opportunity to fire the second 59 in the space of two days in the third round of the Sony Open.
While runaway leader Justin Thomas, who became the seventh player to break 60 on the PGA Tour on Thursday, continued to carve up the record books at Waialae Country Club, Kisner needed to eagle the ninth - his last - to join the exclusive 59 club.
Having rolled in a 25-foot putt for his ninth birdie of a remarkable round on the eighth green, Kisner split the fairway with a monster 342-yard drive and knocked a superb second to nine feet.
But faced with the chance of a lifetime, Kisner unfortunately mis-read the putt for eagle and watched with bemusement as his ball slid past the cup on the right side.
Kisner, who made the halfway cut with nothing to spare, tapped in for birdie and a round of 60, his lowest on Tour by a full three shots. But, at 13 under for the tournament, he was nine shots adrift of the red-hot Thomas heading into the final round.
