Brandt Snedeker played one of the best rounds of his career in brutal conditions before the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open was forced into a Monday finish.
Despite the South Course at Torrey Pines being battered by fierce winds and driving rain for much of Sunday, Snedeker somehow managed to take only 69 shots - three under for the round - to earn the clubhouse lead on six under.
Jimmy Walker was the only man ahead of Snedeker when play was abandoned, leaving the course on seven under with eight holes of his final round to complete on Monday.
To put Snedeker's remarkable effort into context, the other 71 players in the field were a combined 377 over par on the day, with nobody under the card.
Snedeker, who made just one bogey in 72 holes when he won last year's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, dropped a shot at the first before grinding out eight consecutive pars to turn in 37.
The 35-year-old then mounted his astonishing charge with a run of four birdies in five holes, and he parred safely in to set the clubhouse target for the bedraggled pros still trying to come to terms with the conditions.
"Luckily my attitude was fantastic all day," said Snedeker, who made all 14 of his putts from 10 feet or less. "I wasn't playing great but I made a couple of putts around the turn and that kind of got me going.
"It was one of those special days. I don't think I could go out there and recreate it and do it again. I'm really glad I did it and glad it's over with. I've had crazy stuff happen here before so hopefully I can have it happen again."
Walker barely hit a fairway on the front nine but limited the damage to dropped shots at the second and seventh before he came close to a hole-in-one at the short eighth, where his sublime tee shot set up a three-foot putt for birdie.
Overnight joint-leader KJ Choi is alongside Snedeker on six under and still in contention for his first win since the 2011 Players Championship despite being three over for his final round after 10 holes.
Kevin Streelman and Freddie Jacobson are a further shot adrift with five and seven holes remaining respectively, while JB Holmes is three behind Walker with five holes to complete.
Ireland's Shane Lowry did well to get round in 73 to close on level par, but his compatriot Paul Dunne was six over for the day and one over for the tournament with two holes remaining.
