Rory McIlroy’s hopes of a winning start to 2016 found a watery grave during the final round of the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.
Making his first appearance since November's DP World Tour Championship victory, McIlroy needed a fast start when beginning the final round four strokes back but saw his hopes fade during the opening holes.
The world No 3 had already dropped a shot when an errant tee shot at the fifth ended up in the trees, but worse was to follow at the par-four next.
With his drive heading left and seemingly heading towards the rough, McIlroy's ball took an unfortunate bounce along the cart path before landing in the drink.
McIlroy did recover to produce a stunning par-save, but was left frustrated by his spell in the water.
